Sizes and colours as variants, a barcode for each, and editing prices.
0:00 Introduction
In this episode we add a product that comes in several sizes, and give every size its own barcode.
0:07 What is a variant?
A fleece jacket in small, medium and large is one product, but three things on the shelf. Each size is a variant. A variant has its own SKU, barcode, price and stock count, so the register can tell them apart.
0:21 Starting the product
Click New product and choose General retail, as before. Then type the name, Trail Fleece, with a retail price of forty five dollars, a cost of eighteen, and the SKU, F L E E C E.
0:35 Adding sizes
Now open the Variants and stock tab. Options are the things that differ between variants, like size or colour. Click Add option.
Name the option Size. Then add its values one at a time. Click Add value, type the value, and press Enter. We add S, M and L.
The table underneath now has one row per variant. Each combination of option values becomes its own row. If you add a second option, such as Colour, you get a row for every size and colour pair.
1:08 SKU, barcode and stock for each
The SKU of each variant is built from the product SKU and the size, so S, M and L are kept apart automatically.
The barcode column is where you type the code printed on the product. Click a cell and type it, or point a barcode scanner at the cell. Here are three codes for S, M and L.
If a product has no barcode, leave the cell empty. If auto generate barcodes is switched on in the store settings, the system makes one for you.
The price column starts at the product price. Large costs a little more, so we change it to forty eight dollars.
Opening stock is entered for each variant and outlet. At Main Street we have four small, six medium and three large.
1:54 Creating it
Press Create product.
The product is created with three variants, and thirteen items on hand.
2:02 Editing prices and barcodes later
Open the Variants tab to change things later. Each row can be edited in place.
Let's raise the medium price to forty six dollars. Type the new price into the cell.
One variant can have more than one barcode, for example when a supplier changes the packaging. Use Add barcode on a row to add another. A scan of any of them finds the same variant.
Press Save to keep the change.
Your product now has sizes, with a barcode and price for each. In the next episode, we organise the catalogue with categories, brands and suppliers.
