Serve the business, or its online store, on your own domain, and connect Stripe so the business can take card payments.
0:00 Introduction
In this episode we do two things on the business page: serve your business on your own domain, and connect Stripe so it can take card payments.
0:09 Your own address
Your business already has an address on the platform domain. The Custom hostnames card shows the address of your online store too, which the platform gives you for free. You can serve either one at your own domain, once you prove the domain is yours.
Next to the Add button is a choice: A new name is for the Back office, or for the Online store. We want the shop on its own domain, so open the choice and pick Online store.
Type the domain name, here shop dot example dot com, and press Add.
The hostname is listed as pending, and marked online store. The card gives you two ways to prove you control it. The first is a DNS record: a TXT record with this name and this value, which you create where you manage the domain.
The second is to serve a small text file at this exact web address, with this exact text in it. Use whichever is easier for you.
Then point the name at the online store service, with a CNAME or an A record. The card says that its certificate is issued automatically, so there is nothing more to set up. Once both are in place, Verify now checks the name at once.
The console already checked the name once, when we added it. We made this domain up, so that check failed, and the card tells us why on the Last check line. Press Refresh to see it. The hostname stays pending, and the console checks again by itself from time to time, so you do not have to keep pressing the button.
1:38 Card payments
Now card payments. The Payments card says Not connected. Cards are paid through your own Stripe account, so the money goes to you.
Press Connect with Stripe. The console sends you to Stripe, to finish setting up there.
This is Stripe's side. On the real Stripe you fill in your business details and your bank account. In this practice setup, Stripe is a stand-in that completes at once.
When you are done, Stripe sends you back to the console. The console checks with Stripe that setup is finished, and tells you.
Payments connected. Your Stripe account is connected and can take card payments, and its account number is shown. The page was loaded afresh, so use Sign in to carry on.
Open the business again and look at the Payments card.
It now shows the connected Stripe account, in place of the Connect button. Cards are paid through it.
In the next episode we export all your data, in an encrypted archive that only you can open.
