Request an encrypted archive of everything in your business, keep the one-time key safe, and download the file.
0:00 Introduction
Your business's data belongs to you. In this episode we take a complete copy of it, in an encrypted file that only you can open.
0:09 Requesting an export
On the business page, scroll down to the Export your data card. It makes an encrypted archive of everything: the database, your files, and a check of the audit journal.
There is one optional box: Encrypt to my own key. If you already have an age key, paste its public part here. We leave it empty, so the console makes a one-time key for us.
Press Request an export.
0:35 The key
A dialog shows the key, which starts with AGE dash SECRET dash KEY. This is the only time you will ever see it. Without it nobody can open the archive, not even us.
Copy it into a password manager or write it somewhere safe. Then tick the box that says you have saved it, and press Done.
0:55 Downloading
The export is built in the background. The card lists it, and we refresh it until it is ready. This takes a little while.
It is ready. The card shows how many rows and files the archive holds, says the audit journal was verified, and tells you until when you can download it.
Press Download. The file ends in dot tar dot gz dot age, because it is a compressed archive, encrypted with age.
To open it, use age, a free tool, with the key you saved. Inside is a manifest, the database tables, and your files. A wrong key opens nothing.
Keep the file and the key in different places. Anyone who has both has your data. Exports are a good habit before any big change.
The last episode is for the people who run the platform: the operator console.
