Choosing a look, publishing it, the stores that ship or offer pickup, products online, shipping, tax, and going live.

0:00 Introduction

In this episode we open your online store. We choose a look, decide which stores fill orders, put products online, set shipping and tax, and go live.

0:10 The overview

In the menu, scroll down to the Online store group, and choose Overview. It opens on the store status. A new store is a draft, which means it is closed to shoppers.

Under it is a list of what is missing before the store can go live: a theme, the stores that fill orders, and products. A warning adds that no tax will be charged until we register for tax. We will do each one.

0:36 Choose a look

First, the look. Go to Themes. A theme is how your shop looks to shoppers.

There is no theme yet, so the page offers a gallery of looks, each built for a kind of shop. Apothecary is for health and beauty, Atelier for apparel and footwear.

Scroll down for more. Pantry is warm and friendly, for food and drink. Trailhead is bold and rugged, for sporting goods and bicycles. Workshop is dense and practical, for hardware and machinery.

We will use Harbor. Press Add on its card.

Keep the name, or type your own, and press Add.

Harbor is added, but not live yet. Press Publish, and confirm. Shoppers see a published theme straight away.

The Harbor card is now marked Live.

1:21 Locations

Next, which stores fill online orders. Open Locations and shipping.

Every store is listed with a switch. A store that does neither shipping nor pickup does not sell online. Turn on Main Street.

Open its settings. A store can ship, offer pickup, or both. Main Street will do both, so turn on Offers pickup, and write the instructions the shopper will read.

You also set how many hours a pickup order takes to get ready, and a safety buffer of units kept back from online sale. Press Save.

Now Harbor Mall. Turn it on and open its settings. This store is for pickup only, so turn Ships orders off.

Save it. The list now says what each store does.

2:03 Products online

Now the products. Online products lists your whole catalogue, and nothing is on the shop until you choose it.

Tick the products you want to sell, and the page counts them. Services, such as labour, and gift cards are left out here. Products marked In store only, such as serial-numbered items and wine, cannot be ticked.

Press Show online. Each product gets an address on the shop, shown under its name. Hide online takes them off again.

2:39 Shipping

Back in Locations and shipping, open the Zones and rates tab. There are no zones yet, so shoppers could only pick up.

Press New zone. Call it United States, and give it the country code US.

Save, then press Add a rate.

We will call it Standard shipping, with a flat price of six dollars fifty. Orders over one hundred dollars ship free, and delivery takes three to five days.

Press Save.

3:07 Tax

Then tax. Open the Tax page. The registrations come first: the shop charges tax only where you are registered.

Press Add registration. Choose United States, then the state where the business is, Massachusetts, and type your registration number.

Save. The registration is listed as active.

3:31 Going live

Everything is ready, so back on the overview we can open the store.

Open the Status menu and choose Live, open to everyone.

Press Apply status. The badge says Live, and the list of missing things has gone. Payments here use the simulated checkout of this practice store.

Next to the shop address is the Open shop button. Press it to see what shoppers see.

3:54 Your shop

This is your online store in the Harbor look, with its announcement bar, menu and a large banner.

Scrolling down, the collections are listed, and the products we put online appear under Fresh from the harbor.

Further down are a story, customer words, questions and a sign-up form. All of it can be changed, which is the next episode.

Your online store is open. In the next episode we make it look like yours.
