Adding a reader to an outlet by pairing it with its code, and giving a register its primary reader and a backup.
0:00 Introduction
A card reader belongs to one connection and one outlet, and a register lists the readers it may use. In this episode we pair a reader, and put it on a register.
0:11 Adding a reader
In the menu, under Admin, choose Payments.
Scroll down to Card readers. Readers belong to an outlet, so first choose the outlet. We choose Main Street.
One reader is here already, the spare reader, on the practice account. Each reader shows its state, the connection it belongs to, and the registers that use it. Nobody uses this one yet.
Press Add a card reader.
The wizard asks which connection the reader belongs to. We choose Training account.
Then it offers three ways to add a reader. Pair a new reader, with the code it shows. Bring one in, when the provider already knows the reader. Or enter its id by hand. Which ones are offered depends on the provider.
The steps come from the provider. Here they say there is no reader to switch on, and to type any pairing code.
We type a code, and give the reader a name that tells your staff which one it is: Front till reader.
Press Pair reader. The provider registers the reader, and the wizard waits until it says it is done.
The reader is paired and ready. Press Done.
1:23 Putting it on a register
Front till reader is now in the list, ready, and it belongs to the training account.
Now we tell a register to use it. Under Registers, Register 2 has no reader.
Press Choose readers.
The dialog lists the readers this register may use. The first one is its primary reader. We add Front till reader with the plus button, and then the spare reader, which becomes its backup.
Press Save. Register 2 now shows its primary reader, marked in use, and its backup.
If the processor of the primary reader stops answering, a manager can switch the register to the backup. We see how in the next episode.
In the next episode, the processor of a register goes down, and a manager switches it to the backup reader.
